MUSIC THERAPY

Music Therapy is a health care and special education profession where engagement in active and receptive music making within the context of a therapeutic relationship helps a client achieve non-musical, therapeutic goals.  Music therapy takes place in numerous clinical settings, such as clinics, clients homes, schools, hospitals, long-term facilities, psychiatric setting, hospice care units and correction facilities.

The program held at Sun Lakes was created for Banner Alzheimer’s Institute by Arizona State University under the direction of professor Robin Rio.  Sun Joo Lee conducts the weekly programs.  The ASU MM program in music therapy provides music therapists with graduate-level study in the theory and practice of music therapy.  The program fosters an expanded research perspective in music therapy, emphasizing community partnerships, community based music therapy program development and external funding that culminates in a graduate clinical project or thesis.  Candidates for the program must hold the credential Music Therapist-Board Certified or a undergraduate degrees in either music or music therapy.

The Music Therapy program in the ASU School of Music brings over 40 years of music and academic excellence into today’s clinical and technological health care environment.  As a nationally renowned music therapy program, the goal at Arizona State University is to provide students with the education and development tools to excel in their career as a music therapist.

Director Sun Joo Lee, MM,MT-BC, NMT gets started with an active song choice for her participants.  The program was initiated by the Sun Lakes Creative Engagement Partners for people with age related difficulties such as memory loss and Parkinson disease and their partners.  It was designed by ASU School of Music Therapy and is promoted by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

By focusing on the partnership between the individual and their caregiver, an enjoyable forum to share experiences is created.  It provides opportunities for respite and intimacy between family and friends in a stimulating, music centered environment.

For those with Parkinson’s – This weekly music therapy session provides an opportunity for PD patients to come together to sing, play rhythms and move to music.  Music Therapy is effective to help improve motor functions and cognitive ability such as (1) voice/speech deficit, (2) motor/gait control, (3) limited range of motion, (4) depression, (5) anxiety and (6) cognitive decline but also to enhance the quality of life.

The sessions are held on Thursdays at 1:00 P.M. in the choir room at the Sun Lakes United Methodist church 9848 East Riggs Road.  Sun Joo Lee directs two Mohammand Ali Parkinson’s Center Tremble Clefs Choirs for in the Phoenix and directs several programs for Parkinson and memory impaired difficulties in the Phoenix area. For those with memory loss – The session is especially helpful with people who are experiencing age-related difficulties, particularly cognitive, social and physical issues.  Music therapy interventions are designed to (1) promote wellness, (2) manage stress, (3) alleviate pain, (4) express feelings, (5) enhance memory, (6) improve communications, and (7) promote physical rehabilitation,
